Location : rejang land, south west sumatra, Indonesia

Spathoglottis plicata var. alba
Anggrek tanah warna putih

Spathoglottis plicata varietas alba, in situ from Rejang land

Namun demikian, varian albanya sangat jarang terlihat.

Memelihara Spathoglottis plicata varietas alba tidaklah sulit.

Anggrek tanah penyebarannya sangat luas.

Spathoglottis plicata varietas alba in situ from Rejang land

Common Name or Meaning The Lily-Like Leaf Acriopsis - In Thailand - Ruhini

Flower Size 1/2" [1.25 cm]

Moderate shade and humidity as well as hot to warm conditions are required with a dry period when not growing and then ample water while in growth to have this epiphytic orchid bloom in the spring and summer on a basal, 22" [25 cm] long, erect, paniculate inflorescence with many [to 200] flowers arising basally with basal sheaths where it is found in Thailand, Indochina, Malaysia, Indonesia, Borneo, Sulawesi, New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, Northern Australia and the Philippines from sealevel to under 1600 meters in altitude in lowland swamps and montane forests as well as semi-deciduous and deciduous dry lowland forests at elevations of sealevel to 700 meters. This small to medium sized epiphyte has small, clustered, ovoid, 5 to 7 noded pseudobulbs and carries 3 to 4 apical, coriaceous, linear, obtuse leaves and has a symbiotic relationship with ants.

In java treatments for fevers associated with Malaria have been treated by boiling the plant and making a broth which is taken by mouth.

Phalaenopsis sumatrana

Posted by Yayux at 7:05 AM 0 comments
The Sumatran Phalaenopsis (Korth. & Rchb.f 1860)

Distribution :
Sumatra (province of Palembang), Myanmar, Java, Bornéo, Thaïlande, Vietnam, Malaisie, Philippines

Synonyms
Phalaenopsis zebrina (Teijs & Binn 1863)
Phalaenopsis acutifolia (Lind 1886)
Polychilos sumatrana (Shim 1982)

Epiphytic plant, exceptionally lithophyte, with stem very short, completely enclosed by imbricating leaf-sheaths.
Roots many, flexuous, glabrous.
Leaves arcuate or pendent, fleshy, obovate or obovate-oblong or oblong-elliptic, a little acute, canaliculate, of an intense green, long from 15 to 30 cm, broad from 4 to 11 cm.

Column Phal.sumatrana (Sweet)

Flower stalk arcuate or erect, robust, green, as long as the foliage or shorter, carrying 2 to 6 flowers or sometimes more, seldom branching.
Bracts small, fleshy, triangular, green, dorsally ducted.
Flower from 5 to 6 cm, with very spread out segments. Sepals and petals similar and almost equal (petals somewhat smaller), largely oblong-anceolate to elliptic-lanceolate, acute, fleshy, somewhat shining.

Lip Phal.sumatrana (Sweet)

Sepals are dorsally carinate towards the apex, the petals a little narrower and wedge-shaped.
Lip shorter than the sepals, spread out, very briefly onguiculate, deeply 3-lobed. Lateral lobes fleshy, erect and connivent, ligulate, apex truncated and bidentate, with external face provided of an acute and oblique hull and internal face with a well marked callus. Midlobe very thick and fleshy, almost semi-cylindrical, oblong, with higher face provided with a very thick and extremely prominent keel, densely hairy in its higher half, interior face a little concave with a median furrow. Between the lateral lobes, the disc is provided with an appendix fleshy, multifide, and, front, of another appendix a little longer and bifide.
Semi-cylindrical column, edge of the clinandre largely winged , finely denticulate and fringed. Anther surmounted of a broad and fleshy circular wing.
Pedicellate ovary of 4 cm long.

Observations

Very variable color. Floral segments white/cream tinted of green, barred transversely of red/brown. Lateral lobes of lip white with a large orange macula in the middle at level of the callus. White midlobe with some longitudinal mauve strippes even almost completely coloured.
Flowering throughout the year, with a peak in spring.
The flower is very scented and releases a strong odor of elder tree, especially in the morning. The plant often produces several floral stalks.
Grow in warm forests, wet, on the trunks rather than on the branches, above the wet draughts or the rivers, in partnership with Phalaenopsis violacea.
The flowering of Phalaenopsis sumatrana is one exceptional duration. Fecundation, in nature, of this plant appears to be a rare event, which would explain the longevity of the flowers awaiting the agent pollenisator a long time.

History

Discovered by Gerssen, collector for Teijsmann in 1859 with Phalaenopsis violacea. Only one specimen survived, which flowers in 1860 in the botanical garden of Leyde under the name of Phalaenopsis zebrina. Introduced in England in 1864 by Low & Co company.
The first illustration published by Korthals, Dutch botanist (1807-1892), before 1839 (undoubtedly 1833) described in fact a Phalaenopsis inscriptiosinensis and not the species currently known under the name of Phalaenopsis sumatrana.

Botanical varieties

Phalaenopsis sumatrana var.alba (Wilson 1915)
White flower, lip delicately stripped with wine colour on each side of the midlobe. Lateral lobes clear yellow.

Phalaenopsis sumatrana var.paucivittata (Rchb.f 1882)
Synonym. Phalaenopsis paucivittata (Fowl.1985).
Segments of a milky white, provided of few bars brown/red. Two mauve stippes on each side of the midlobe. Very rare in nature. This Phalaenopsis is sometimes known in the Philippines islands under the name of Phalaenopsis bartonii.

In sumatra this orchid collect and discription by Rolfe and Smith, J.J. (1909 - 1918, see history specimen below) and taken from Suban ayam (now the area part of Rejang Lebong Regency in Rejang Land), and than he review and compare another sample from specimen nearby Rimbo Pengadang (now part of Lebong Regency recently), and give determination name for Orchid as Bulbophyllum campanulatum. So thats why this orchid meaning as Rejang Land Origin also. In other publication the species report also found in Thailand, Malaysia, Borneo, and philipina (wikipedia). Justify Full

Bulbophyllum campanulatum (from wikipedia)

In rejang language orchid call as kiyuo singeak or klikip (kepahiang dialect terminology). Many orchid from this area I believe need to explore but now dissapear in nature due many illegal logging happen in Rejang Land. What a pity :(

Paphiopedilum victoria-regina, Rare orchid from Rejang Land, Sumatra

Posted by Yayux at 2:51 AM 0 comments
Paphiopedilum victoria-regina
(Paphiopedilum chamberlainianum)

Paphiopedilum victoria-regina from Musi Rawas, rejang land, sumatra

Paphiopedilum victoria-regina is a tropical ladyslipper orchid native to the island of Sumatra. It inhabits pockets in limestone cliff faces near streams and water seepages where humus and leaf detritus collect. Though hundreds of Paphiopedilum hybrids have been developed by orchid growers, there are only about sixty species of this genus, all occurring in southeast Asia and on southwest Pacific islands. Because many Paphiopedilum populations are threatened by logging, agriculture, development, mining, and illegal collection of wild plants, this genus has been included on CITES Appendix I, which prohibits its international trade for commercial purposes.

Grammatophyllum Speciosum Sp dari Kepahyang

Grammatophyllum Speciosum Sp dari Kepahyang
Anggrek Harimau, Anggrek Macan, Ratu Anggrek Dunia, Anggrek Raksasa

Note :

The Giant Orchid, Grammatophyllum speciosum, also called Tiger Orchid, Sugar Cane Orchid or Queen of the Orchids, is the world's largest orchid. It is native to New Guinea, Indonesia and Malaysia, growing in crotches of large trees on exposed areas of the lowland tropical rainforest.

It is an epiphytic and occasionally a lithophytic plant, forming spectacular root bundles. Its cylindric pseudobulbs can grow to a length of 2.5 m. It can grow to gigantic clusters weighing from several hundred kilograms to more than one ton. A Giant Orchid weighing two tons was one of the highlights in the 1851 exhibition at the Crystal Palace in London.

Each raceme can grow to a height of 3m, bearing up to eighty flowers, each 10 cm wide. The flowers are yellow colored with maroon or dark red spots. These flowers are remarkable, since the lowest flowers have no lip. It blooms only once every two to four years. This orchid can, however, remain in bloom for up to two months.

Because of its enormous size, it is rarely cultivated. (wiki).

Distribution
Found from Bangladesh, Myanamar, Thailand, Malayasia, Laos, Vietnam, Borneo, Java, Sumatra and the Philippines in evergreen in semi-deciduous and deciduous dry lowland forests and savana-like woodlands at elevations of sealevel to 1800 meters as a small sized, hot to warm growing epiphyte occuring in lowland and lower montane forests with clustered, ovoid to ellipdsoidal, compressed, unifoliate, deeply sulcate pseudobulbs carrying a single, apical, thinly coriaceous, arcuate, linear-lancelate, to elliptic-obovate, acute leaf with a grooved stalk that blooms on a pendant, laxly 20 to 40 flowered, 6 to 20" [15 to 50 cm] long, slender, flexuous, branching inflorescence arising from the base of the mature, often leafless pseudobulb with small, elliptic-lanceolate floral bracts with short lived, yet successively opening so they last for months, flowers occuring in the early spring as new growths appear. The inflorescence lengthen as the flowers open and new ones arise and the process can take 2 to 3 months. The cute, insect-like flowers are slightly scented and are incredibly intricate if viewed with a magnifying glass. Water copiuosly and fertilize often as the new growths arise and grow but as they mature in late summer and early fall it is best to slowly decrease the water and fertilizer until none is given for a month towards the end of the winter. During this time the leaves will yellow and fall, do not worry they are meant to do this but in nature you can often find it with leaves even as it is blooming. I mounted mine in a wood slat basket so the inflorescence can hang over the side.
